Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. – Psalms 1: 1-3
I truly believe that something phenomenal takes place inside of us every time we immerse ourselves in Scripture.
Because when we read and meditate, we enter into a beautiful communion with the One who gave us life and created everything in all of existence.
God speaks to us and moves through us in a very real and powerful way with His Word.
So David was spot on when he said that those who delight in the law of the Lord are like trees planted by the riverbank.
The Word is indeed like an endless river of pristine, purifying, life-giving, and rejuvenating water.
And when our soul’s roots are planted near that riverbank, we are nourished with the most powerful supply of spiritual nutrients that there is.
Instead of withering away with hatred, unforgiveness, bitterness, jealousy, anger, and pride, we produce the beautiful fruits of the Spirit:
- love
- joy
- peace
- patience
- kindness
- goodness
- faithfulness
- gentleness
- and self control
So making a conscious decision to abide in God’s Word and walk in Jesus’ way every single day of our lives is the best thing we could ever do.
Because when we are firmly planted in the Spirit, we will prosper in every aspect of our lives.
Be blessed,
Alexia
Prayer: God, fill me with a spirit of discipline and give me a heart that desires to seek after you more and more each day. When I read, give me understanding, and help me to discern the meaning of your Word so that I might apply it to my life and produce the fruits of your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
beautiful devotional!
the image of a tree by the riverbank will stay with me. thank you for sharing!
Ayanna, this is actually one of my favorite Scriptures. King David certainly had a way with words. He would’ve made a bomb English major! Lol. 🙂
Amen… this is a key scripture for me! That tree that is planted, immovable and receiving all that it needs to prosper!
