When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” Exodus 32: 1
The story of the golden calf has to be the most hilariously disappointing story in the book of Exodus.
God had just finished laying out the 10 Commandments to Moses on the top of Mount Sinai, the first of which was to not have any other gods before Him.
But while this beautiful scene was taking place at the top of the mountain, a hot mess was brewing at the bottom of the mountain.
The Israelites had seen the plagues that God sent on the Egyptians.
They witnessed the miraculous parting of the Red Sea. When they were hungry, God gave them manna and quail. When they were thirsty, He gave them water.
But as soon as they had to wait on God for a little bit, they forgot about Him and did their own thing.
Deja vu, anyone?
When we read about the Israelite’s worship of the golden calf, it’s easily recognizable as ridiculous behavior.
But we’re guilty of it all the time!
We make golden calves out of other people, partners, money, status. etc.
Instead of waiting on God to give us guidance for our lives, we choose to carve our own paths just like the Israelites carved out that silly calf.
What we create for ourselves without God’s blessing is always second-rate to His plans for us.
Be patient as you wait for God to show Himself!
Be blessed,
Alexia
