Then Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave this order to Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah: “When you help the Hebrew women as they give birth, watch as they deliver. If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live.” But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king’s orders. They allowed the boys to live, too.” Exodus 1: 15-17
According to the Encylopedia Britannica, punishment in Egyptian law included (but was not limited to) mutilation, flogging, and not surprisingly, execution.
In the book of Genesis, it is written that a servant of Pharaoh was brutally impaled on a pole.
So these Hebrew midwives knew exactly what they were up against when they defied Pharaoh.
They had neither power nor status. And they were women. They had every reason to fear Pharaoh’s punishment.
But the thought of going against God, sabotaging His plan and His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, was way more terrifying than any earthly punishment that Pharaoh could inflict.
What we can all learn from these brave women is this: When you know who God is and understand the power He holds, you have no reason to fear any human being.
Just think:
It was Harriet Tubman’s fear of God and not of man that led her to free hundreds of slaves.
It was Alice Herz- Sommer’s fear of God and not of man that gave her peace in a Nazi concentration camp.
It was Rosa Parks’ fear of God and not of man that kept her from moving to the back of the bus.
And it’s the fear of God, not of man, that strengthens many Christians across the globe to confess their faith in Christ in the face of violent persecution.
Be assured that you don’t have to fear any human being in your life either. Not your boss. Not your partner. Not your enemies. Nobody.
If God is for you, no man can be against you.
Be blessed,
Alexia
Amen!!
