Why is life given to those with no future, those God has surrounded with difficulties? I cannot eat for sighing; my groans pour out like water. – Job 3: 23-24
If you or someone you know suffers from PTSD or depression, know that God’s Word does not in any way sugarcoat suffering.
In the book of Job, we are introduced to a wonderful, blameless man named…Job. He’s prosperous, good-spirited, and he takes nothing for granted. He’s deserving of blessings galore.
However, after a series of unfortunate events, he’s brought to his knees with grief and despair.
He cries out in pain, and he questions his life. He wishes he’d been stillborn. Scripture tells us he longed for death more eagerly than for hidden treasure. It’s never written as such, but Job was pretty much suicidal.
People endure grueling, unfathomable, blood-curdling things every day that cause them to sink into depression and question God (or His existence). However, in the context of God’s Word, Job’s lamentations are especially profound.
Why?
Because Job’s words alone are an affirmation that God understands the depths of our lows.
He understands the darkest, most painful corners of our souls. He understands emotions that we don’t even have words for. (I can personally attest to this)
The book of Job is thought to have predated the book of Genesis. So isn’t it remarkable that God made provisions early on in His Word to let mankind know that He understands our suffering?
If you battle trauma, depression, or suicidal ideations, allow Job to speak to you a little bit. Know that you’re not alone. Know that God is in the trenches with you. And seek help.
